Fuel loads targeted in Joondalup bushfire risk area

Justin BianchiniJoondalup Times

THE City of Joondalup will work with government agencies next week to reduce fire fuel loads in bushland near homes in Tern Ridge, Joondalup.

It follows a report from the Department of Fire and Emergency Services earlier this year that identified the area in Yellagonga Regional Park as at high risk of bushfire.

A Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions contractor will on Tuesday start removing acacia, shrubs and weeds up to 6m from the wooden boundary bollards along Tern Bridge.

The City said ornamentally planted bottlebrushes also would be cleared, but grass trees, zamia palms and trees would remain.

The removal of the vegetation, expected to take two days, would provide more safety for firefighters and residents.

The City had already cleared the road verge of vegetation (except trees) running parallel to Yellagonga Regional Park from Tern Ridge to Lakeside Drive, and City Rangers would continue to assess residential street verges.

The City is asking property owners to ensure verges are clear to a minimum of 1.5m back from the kerb and that vegetation (leaves, twigs) rubbish and other flammable material is cleared regularly to create a protection zone.

Other advice includes:

• Check roofs, gutters and buildings are free of leaves and debris.

Trim branches on private land that overhang house or powerlines.

• Cut long grass no higher than 50mm.

• Ensure safe storage of flammable products.
