BASED at Hillarys Primary School, Camp Australia is WA’s first outside school hours care centre accredited as Epilepsy Smart.

The centre joins two WA schools that have so far been accredited in the new Epilepsy Smart Schools Program: Belridge Secondary Education Support Centre and Balingup Primary School.

And there are more than 30 schools on the path to gain accreditation in 2020.

Epilepsy WA chief executive Emma Buitendag recently visited the Camp Australia team to present them with their Epilepsy Smart certificate.

“Epilepsy WA is so pleased that Camp Australia has recognised the importance of becoming epilepsy smart to ensure children with epilepsy feel safe and supported outside of their home environment,” she said.

“It’s not only important for childcare centres and schools to undertake training in epilepsy awareness and management, but any organisation working with children is encouraged to upskill.”

Mrs Buitendag said there were three steps to becoming recognised as an Epilepsy Smart school with trainer support and resources offered online.
