DEMOLITION of Hillarys amusement park The Great Escape started yesterday but what is planned for the site is yet to be revealed.

Community News reported in September last year that the popular Perth attraction had not opened since June and was closed indefinitely while leasehold owner Wyllie Group sought a new tenant.

The group confirmed in a statement that it had started the “demolition and ‘make good’ of The Great Escape site… in accordance with the terms of its ground lease commitments with the Department of Transport”.

“The demolition of the site will include the removal of the water slides and all other recreational installations,” it said.

Executive chairman Wayne McGrath said the group was “still in negotiations with the Department of Transport in relation to the head lease” but had “reached a negotiated conditional position with a new subtenant for the site”.

“Until all negations have concluded, the company is unable to release details of the new planned facility,” the statement said.

“However, they look forward to being in a position to do so in the next few months.”
