THE City of Joondalup has removed the western timber jetty at Ocean Reef Boat Harbour because of its poor condition and potential safety issues.

Mayor Albert Jacob said it would have cost the City about $1 million to restore the jetty, located against the sea wall, to a suitable condition.

“The ageing jetty posed a potential safety hazard to users and given the anticipated commencement of the Ocean Reef Marina development project and recent installation of several floating jetties within the harbour, the City decided to remove the jetty at the earliest opportunity,” he said.

Affected parties such as the Ocean Reef Sea Sports Club and Whitfords Volunteer Sea Rescue were notified of the work, which started earlier this month.

Works will continue over the next few weeks to remove the steel piles.

The City has salvaged the timber from the jetty for re-purposing works such as nature play equipment at local parks.
