JOONDALUP Mayor Troy Pickard used the opening of the City’s annual invitation art award to implore the State Government and arts community to back a major performance centre for the region.

On the night Kalgoorlie artist Lee Harrop was named as the $7000 overall winner, Mr Pickard said a business plan for a $100 million performing arts and cultural centre in Joondalup would go before council next month and out for public consultation in the new year.

He called on State representatives present at the Saturday function at Lakeside Joondalup – Attorney General Michael Mischin and Carine MLA Tony Krsticevic – to lobby the Government on Joondalup’s behalf to contribute $10 million.

“Everyone here tonight in support of art and culture I call on you not only to support the Joondalup performing arts and cultural facility but encourage many others in the community to do likewise,” Mr Pickard said.

He said the facility would also house the City’s art collection.
