THE screen will light up for Perth’s annual international outdoor movie festival in Joondalup from tonight.

The Lotterywest Films program started with Faces Places at UWA last week and the French documentary will screen at ECU’s Joondalup Pines venue from tonight until Sunday.

The film features veteran cinematographer Agnes Varda (89) and photographer JR as they take their mobile photography lab around rural and working-class France.

Film festival program manager Tom Vincent said this year both the Somerville and Joondalup cinemas would screen the same line-up of films.

Mr Vincent said there were many outdoor cinemas across Perth, and the northern suburbs venue was a “lovely setting”.

“It’s one of the best, if not the best, outdoor cinema in the country,” he said.

“There are lots and lots of outdoor cinemas now, especially in Perth, (but) ours is the only program that will show you the best films from around the world.”

Mr Vincent said the first half of the 2017-18 season had plenty of humour and recommended Swedish movie Borg vs McEnroe about the 1980 Wimbledon tennis championships.

Mr Vincent said the following week’s documentary from New Zealand called Pecking Order was a “funny” film about the Christchurch poultry club and its chicken fanciers.

“It’s like Best in Show but with chickens and it’s real,” he said.

He also recommended next month’s British comedy The Party, about a group of mates who get together for a dinner party where secrets are revealed.

Mr Vincent said the program for the second half of the season, which will be announced January 15, would include movies from Australia, Brazil, Africa and Thailand.
