Joondalup residents open home for Sustainable House Day

Lucy JarvisJoondalup Times

JOONDALUP residents Magdalen and Bill Purcell will open their home to others for this weekend’s Sustainable House Day.

Their solar-passive, double-storey house features double-glazed windows, solar panels and heat saving devices, cellular shades and blinds.

It has a sun room to north that serves as a boiler room in winter and a heat insulation trap in summer.

Their garden has wicker beds plus hydroponics for growing vegetables and chickens for fresh eggs, with the Purcells recycling waste to feed the chickens and to enrich the soil. There are also four 1000-litre water tanks for watering the garden.
