Wil Schwagermann (6), Lily McCain (6) and Isabelle Pedley (5) attend Joondalup Education Support Centre and will take part in StepUP! For Down Syndrome with family and friends on Sunday.

Wil’s mum Nikki, who is a family support worker for DSWA, started volunteering for the organisation after Wil was born and has attended the walk every year since.

“We’ve always gone to the event; the first one was when Wil was five months,” she said.

“The aim is to promote inclusion of people with Down syndrome and raise money for Down Syndrome WA.”

Mrs Schwagermann’s work with DSWA involves visiting the parents of children born with Down syndrome in hospital.

“In the early days when I had Wil, we didn’t realise he had Down syndrome until after he was born, so knowing I’ve been there can be a bit of support to them and they can see Wil, see how happy and crazy and accepted he is,” she said.

The trio will walk 4km along the Swan River foreshore as team Joondalup Buddies and hope to raise $1000 for DSWA.

“The children are all looking forward to this event and having fun with their friends and family. It’s going to be a great day,” Mrs Schwagermann said.
