Lakeside Joondalup unveils Changing Places mural by Monica McGhie

ARTIST Monica McGhie created an eye-catching mural for Changing Places facility at Lakeside Joondalup Shopping City.

The shopping centre has unveiled the mural that McGhie painted using her mouth as she has no arms and legs.

She is an advocate for people with disabilities, who have had better access to bathroom facilities since the Changing Places room opened in January.

The facility is fitted with a change table and hoist, and was the first of its kind in a WA shopping centre.

Centre manager Gemma Hannigan said since it opened, the facility had enabled many people with disabilities, their carers and families to comfortably plan and enjoy a visit to the centre.

“For people with severe disabilities, not having access to a facility like ours, isolates them and their carers in their homes,” she said.

“We’re working to make Lakeside Joondalup the destination of choice for people with a disability.

“We engaged Monica McGhie to create an artwork that would add colour and vibrancy to the facility and bring joy to its users.

“As a frequent visitor to Lakeside Joondalup and a local artist, we knew Ms McGhie was perfect for the job.”
