Tyler BrownJoondalup Times

LONDON is home to Big Ben and Greenwood is now home to its little brother thanks to artist Phil Gamblen.

The artwork has been installed next to Penistone Park’s new community sporting facility as part of the City of Joondalup’s upgrades.

Little Ben is a conceptual artwork with a sound component.

It plays the Westminster Chimes quarterly and marks the hour, with the bells replaced by metal rubbish bins and buckets creating a deep sound.

Because the tune is made by solenoid mechanisms that strike the bottom of the bins, the sound is reminiscent of someone putting dustbins out or banging and clanging on galvanised metal buckets.

Originally designed to chime on the hour, the artist has adapted the artwork and it now chimes between 9am and 5pm only.
