A MAN accused of indecently assaulting a 13-year-old girl after asking her to play underwater rugby with him at Craigie Leisure Centre last month has been granted bail.

Andrew Joseph Buchold appeared via video link from Hakea Prison in Joondalup Magistrates Court today on a charge of indecently dealing with a child in circumstances of aggravation.

The 49-year-old man allegedly approached the girl in a pool and asked her to play rugby with him on February 13.

He was arrested on March 9 and had remained in prison since.

His defence lawyer said his wife, who was in court, remained supportive of him.

She said while the charge was serious, it was not so serious that he should be held in custody.

The police prosecutor said there were concerns the alleged offender would reoffend.

She alleged he exhibited “strange behaviour when it comes to water and young children”.

The court heard the man was a fruit and vegetable worker at a supermarket.

Magistrate Deen Potter granted bail under strict conditions, which prevented him from going near the victim and from going within 100m of an aquatic centre.

He was not allowed any unsupervised contact with children aged under 16.
