A spokesman for Dr Aly’s office told AAP she was present during the incident.

He did not make threats towards staff members, who were protected by security glass.

Joondalup Police arrived a short time later and arrested the man who was conveyed to Joondalup Health Campus.

Police are continuing their inquiries into the incident.

Dr Aly told 6PR she believed the man was wielding a fairly large kitchen knife and had issues with mental health.

“He didn’t make an outright threat but obviously wielding a knife really shook up one of my staff members who was attending to him at the time,” she said

“He came in wanting to speak to somebody, it was very difficult to make out what the issue was.

“My immediate concern at the time was keeping my staff safe and making sure he was contained because we’re located at the shopping centre and I didn’t want him to go out of my office and go into the shopping centre where he couldn’t be contained.”
