Tyler BrownJoondalup Times

A MAN charged with shooting a 50-year-old man in the chest at a house in Beldon has been released on bail.

Dean Anthony Bertasso, 29, appeared in custody at Joondalup Magistrate’s Court on Friday charged with an unlawful act or omission with intent to harm.

The alleged shooting occurred in the lounge room of a home in Lockerville Close about 7.30am on October 3 and it is believed the men were known to each other.

The victim, Gregory Shoesmith, suffered a non life-threatening injury and was taken by ambulance to Royal Perth Hospital for treatment.

Police advised this morning that the Craigie resident had been charged, appearing in their custody before Magistrate Gregory Benn.

His lawyer Paul Holmes requested the matter be adjourned for legal advice and applied for bail.

While the police prosecutor did not oppose the application, she said it was a “serious offence” and he had run off, “taking a while” to find him, and requested several conditions be made.

Mr Holmes said Bertasso could provide a $10,000 personal undertaking and a $10,000 surety from his father who was also in the courtroom.

He said his client was not a flight risk given “everyone he knows lives in WA”, but also suggested he could report to Joondalup police station three times a week and live at an address in Craigie.

As well as those conditions, Mr Benn imposed a protective condition that Bertasso not contact Mr Shoesmith or go within 50m of him or where he lives and works.

He also asked Bertasso’s father if he would like any more conditions such as a curfew, but he said he would accept whatever the court decided.

The last condition will require Bertasso to obey “all house rules set by your father”.

He will next appear at Joondalup Magistrate’s Court on November 22.
