Marmion: Dempseys celebrate diamond anniversary

ALMA (79) and Mal (82) Dempsey celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary recently.

To mark their special day, the Marmion pair went for their usual early morning swim at Watermans Bay, despite the unseasonable cold weather, followed by champagne with other swimmers.

Daughter Glenda Cooper said her parents were “always out and about and travelling”.

“We love that they are still so involved and have so many friends and lunches and trips that they enjoy,” she said.

This included a holiday last month March to Kenya and Tanzania.Mrs Cooper said Mr Dempsey had suffered a heart attack two years ago, so the couple had been making sure to “fit more in to life”.

They have been long-time participants in the North Beach Bowling Club, with Mr Dempsey president for 13 years until he retired from the position last year.

Mrs Dempsey was an inaugural member of Zonta and is still involved, while Mr Dempsey is also involved in the Freemasons, RSL and many other community activities.

Before retiring seven years ago, aged 73 and 75, they owned Dempsey Real Estate, which they started after moving to Perth from their country farm.

The couple has four children, eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
