THE inaugural Joziwood South African film festival will take place in Ocean Reef this month.

Festival co-ordinator Chris Greenwood said Prendiville Catholic College would host the three-day festival in the Redmond Theatre from November 17-19.

“There will be four sessions of films over the weekend highlighted by the premier showing of Liewe Kersfeesvader (Dear Santa Claus) on Saturday at 7pm,” he said.

“The festival has been granted exclusive rights to show the film on the same weekend as its premier opening in Cape Town.

“Artistic director and film maker Anika Fourie, an ex-pat South African, has programmed a wide range of feature and short films including animation from one of the world’s most creative filmmakers Diek Grobler.

“The international award winning documentary Boers At The End Of The World headlines our Sunday session at 5pm.”

The festival idea stemmed from discussions with the ex-pat community who rarely see films depicting their culture in their new home.

“We have a vibrant South African community in the north and we wanted to create an event that all South Africans can enjoy,” Miss Fourie said.

“It’s a cultural event that hopes to include not only South Africans, but also lovers of foreign films.

“I’ve been living in Perth for almost six years and wanted to share the movies coming out of South Africa.

“The content ranges from Afrikaans, English and even other South African languages.

“We have short films for kids (all in English) and feature length films (all Afrikaans and English, with subtitles) all weekend long.

“We will have food trucks and South African snacks on the premises for the movie goers.”

The feature film on Friday will be Durban Poison.
