JOONDALUP Mayor Troy Pickard says the City welcomes the election commitment by the Labor Party to spend $40 million on the long-awaited Ocean Reef Marina project.
“It is not only great news for our local community and residents who have overwhelmingly backed this project over a number of years, it’s great news for the State,” he said.
“The marina project is an exciting and visionary project that will deliver our City with a world class recreational, residential, boating and tourism marina development, providing a major boost to tourism and creating thousands of jobs in the northern suburbs over the life of the development.
“The population of the northern corridor is expected to grow significantly in the next decade and the marina represents a rare opportunity for publicly-owned coastal land to be developed to provide a world-class and iconic facility that encompasses high levels of environmental, economic and social sustainability.
“The City of Joondalup has been custodian of the Ocean Reef Marina project for a number of years and has invested significant resources in developing the marina concept plan and studies, investigations and reviews required for development.
“However, we have always been quite clear that our role was to prepare a structure plan, obtain environmental and planning approvals and, in association with the State Government, determine how the project can best be progressed to construction stage,” he said.
“The City always maintained that it does not have the capacity and resources to build the marina on its own and that it would need the State Government or a public/private partnership to develop the facility.
“I can assure all of our residents and ratepayers, who have overwhelmingly supported this development from the outset, the City remains determined to see the Ocean Reef Marina project through to its completion in accordance with their aspirations,” Mayor Pickard said.
