Overseas troops receive Christmas cards to send home from Ashby women

Justin BianchiniJoondalup Times

AUSSIE troops overseas will have Christmas cards to send to loved ones this year, thanks to a group of Ashby women. Jenny Haliday and her team from Lake Joondalup Lifestyle Village recently presented 600 handmade cards to Joondalup City RSL.

“Back in May at a meeting of the sub-branch, members were advised that as well as making beanies and scarves for military personnel overseas, one thing that they could not buy on deployment was Christmas cards to send home,” Joondalup City RSL secretary Ken Beven said.

“As some of our members live in Lake Joondalup Lifestyle Village, Kay Seddon (also a member of the card making group) and June Stankowski approached the group for assistance.”

The cards have been sent to the troops.

“Also the group put flyers up around the village that for every pack of cards sold the group would add a pack to the package for those overseas.

“Card making activities have been ongoing for some 12 years and any monies raised goes 50-50 for card making consumables and to various charities.

“Currently they are supporting Wheelchair for Kids. They not only sell the cards within the village but also to public at such places as the Wanneroo Show.”

RSL WA has sent the cards to the troops.

Joondalup City RSL (formally Ocean Reef) meets the second Wednesday of the month at Ocean Reef Sea Sports Club, Boat Harbour Quays, Ocean Reef, at 7.30pm.
