Record crowd at Sorrento Quay launch of summer fireworks

Wyllie Group property manager Nigel Steven said it may have been a record for the event, which has been held in varying formats for the past two decades.

“We probably doubled our anticipated crowd,” he said. “We started roughly 20 years ago – it’s every year gotten busier and busier.”

Usually held on the last Saturday of November, Mr Steven said the free event marked the start of summer and they encouraged people to bring picnics.

“The whole idea is to do a community event; for the harbour itself to give the local community something for nothing,” he said.

Mr Steven said nearby residents also enjoyed the fireworks from their balconies, and this year there was a man with a jetpack flying around the harbour before the show.

He said the large crowd at the November 28 event did cause traffic delays.

Mr Steven said they hoped to expand the calendar of community events once the boardwalk amphitheatre opens in early 2016.
