Record numbers dive in

The meet offered competition over 500m, 1.25km and 5km, but the big drawcard of the day was the 10km marathon in which 119 swimmers took part to qualify for the Rottnest Channel Swim, Port to Pub and 2016 Open Water Championships on the Sunshine Coast next month.

The 960 swimmers who attended set a new participation record, boosting numbers from last year’s Australia Day races by 15 per cent.

Lachlan Tassell won the 10km contest, finishing just ahead of Dutchman Lars Bottelier.

Swimming WA president Jeanette Bailey was excited with how popular the series had proven.

“The record number of people at Sorrento today demonstrates how much the people of Western Australia have embraced the Open Water Swimming Series,” Jeanette said.

Rockingham holds round 12 of the series on Sunday.
