Residents getting the blues over East Green progress

KINGSLEY MLA Jessica Stojkovski is calling on the Housing Minister to progress the construction of the East Green development in Greenwood.

Mrs Stojkovski has presented a 47-signature petition to Minister Peter Tinley urging the State Government to act to complete the project on the site of the old East Greenwood Primary School in a reasonable timeframe.

She said the school was demolished in 2011 and the East Green development was planned.

However, community concern about the size and suitability of the plots and a downturn in the housing market has resulted in limited sales and the site remaining empty for eight years.

Residents first raised their concerns over the delay in construction with Mrs Stojkovski in 2018.

“I have been in regular contact with the minister’s office and he is aware of the lack of progress on the site and the increasing concerns of local residents,” she said.

She said Greenwood residents were “tired of living next to sandpit”.

East Green is a development partnership between the Department of Communities and Frasers Property to deliver a mix of housing options, public open space and possibly a facility for a pop-up cafe or shop.

Sales for the development were launched two years ago following a ceremonial sod turning in December, 2016.

At the time, the $51 million three-storey development was going to create 138 homes by its completion in 2020.
