TWO charity stalwarts are about to take part in a cycle marathon to raise funds for cancer research.
Joondalup’s Karen Mills and her Wealthwise colleague Leigh Bydder will participate in the Ride To Conquer Cancer from October 15-16.
Driven to contribute again after another colleague died from melanoma a year ago, Ms Mills is involved in her fourth year – third as a rider – and Mr Bydder is in his third year as a support crew member.
“Cycling a total of 200km to Mandurah and back over two consecutive days places a huge strain on the body and all of Team Wealthwise knows how tough this sort of strain can be,” he said.
“Karen is no exception but gains a great deal of inspiration hearing all the stories of people participating in the ride.”
Mr Bydder takes part in a different way, helping the cyclists by offering encouragement and vehicular support.
This year will be his second in the rear escort vehicle, following the rear cyclists each day and ensuring they finish and are not in any danger.
There is also a personal meaning – his father suffered from melanoma.
Both colleagues have had personal experiences with friends and family suffering from and eventually beating cancer, which reinforces for them how vital research can be.
