SBL: Nichols and Smith named players of the week

THE round four SBL Player of the Week gongs have been awared to South West Slammers import Tre Nichols in the men’s competition, and Perry Lakes Hawks’ Deanna Smith in the women.

Import guard Nichols continued his rich vein of form as he dominated for South West Slammers in their weekend double.

The South-West derby last Friday night saw the Slammers defeat Mandurah Magic in a tight contest 109-104, with Nichols on fire for the home side with 32 points, seven rebounds, seven assists and two steals.

On Saturday night, the Slammers hosted the Goldfields Giants at Eaton Recreation Centre where Nichols starred again with eight rebounds and a game high 37 points, which included six triples in the home side’s nail biting 101-97 win.

Nichols has been named in the SBL Team of the Week for three consecutive weeks and his form is not just showing on the stats sheet but also in the win column with the Slammers now sitting inside the top eight.

Arguably the women’s recruit of the year, Smith has been outstanding for Perry Lakes Hawks since transferring from Cockburn Cougars last year where she was named in the league’s All-Star Five as player/coach.

The 2008 league MVP again showed her class in the Hawks week four double header to ensure her new team continued their unbeaten run in 2016.

The first match of their weekend double last Friday night saw the Hawks visit Morley Recreation Centre to take on East Perth Eagles.

Smith scored a game high 24 points with eight rebounds, two assists, four steals and a block to guide her team to a convincing win, 81-66.

Smith, one of the all-time best shooters in the SBL, put on an exhibition of her talent on Saturday, shooting at 83 per cent from the field which included a perfect six from six from beyond the arc and 100 per cent from the charity stripe in a game high 31 points, 10 rebounds, seven assists, two steals and a block.

Perry Lakes Hawks now sit equal top of the WSBL ladder with only the Willetton Tigers sharing their undefeated record of four wins to start the season.
