FIVE years ago Lynda Holgate started making scented candles as a hobby.

Now the Burns Beach resident has raised more than $100,000 for animal charity groups.

Ms Holgate said she started selling the candles at her work and by Christmas, she had made $500.

“We have an amazing dog called Jess, which we adopted from SAFE Perth and I thought it would be nice to donate that to the animal rescue,” she said.

“The wonderful lady that had been fostering Jess was also doing the finances for the rescue and we had kept in touch.

“She knew I made candles and when she saw my name on the donation she asked if I had been selling them.

“I started thinking how nice people are to donate to animal rescue charities and wouldn’t it be nice if they could receive a little something back.”

Ms Holgate said she then approached Greyhound Adoptions WA who invited her to sell candles at a stall at one of their adoption drives.

“I sold $230 worth of candles that day and handed it all to Greyhound Adoptions WA and Scent to Rescue grew from there.”

Now Ms Holgate sells candles to donate to 46 different animal charities.

“I attend adoption events, fundraisers including quiz nights, high teas and candle parties, donating 100 per cent of my profits to animal rescues,” she said.

“The candles also go out with adoption drives so they can be bought from lots of locations.”
