Tyler BrownJoondalup Times

MATER Dei College students have danced their way to the top.

The Edgewater school performed at the Meraki Festival at the Perth Convention and Exhibition centre, winning the dance section.

The festival is open to primary and secondary schools, with teams having to create their own story in the different performing categories – show choir, musical theatre and dance – and work collaboratively to bring their ideas to life.

Performances can have between 10 and 100 students on stage.

Mater Dei chose to rework a piece from 2017 – 7 Sins – which they reduced from more than seven minutes long to under five minutes.

Each of the sins was represented by a banner made by the school’s graphic arts students and a mask worn by seven of the dance students.

The students took charge of rechoreographing the piece, with different styles chosen to represent the sins, including contemporary, ballet and hip hop.

Judges commented that Mater Dei’s performance was “next level”.
