GUESTS heard about a program helping Aboriginal women prepare for motherhood at the Soroptimist International region meeting last month.

Soroptimist International Joondalup hosted 33 attendees representing 13 clubs around WA at the Currambine Community Centre.

The guest speaker was Jayne Kotz from Kalyakool Moort (Always family) – an organisation of 23 Aboriginal men and women who work with Aboriginal families.

Kotz has developed the program Baby Coming – You Ready? for Aboriginal women, which uses illustrations on an iPad, phone or laptop to open up and guide dialogue between expectant parents and doctors and nurses about how they are coping in the lead up to their child’s birth.

“If there is a potential threat in the home, the discussion in combination with the program will invite the woman to talk about it and this could be crucial to their safety,” Soroptimist International Joondalup’s Vicki Clark said.

Soroptimist International Joondalup holds meetings at Hillarys Yacht Club at 6pm on the fourth Monday of each month.
