MULLALOO Beach Primary School students helped artist Peter Ryan design murals at Sorrento Beach.

Ryan has been painting the murals on a shower block near the surf life saving club on West Coast Drive over the past couple of weeks.

The project, funded by the City of Joondalup’s community funding program, started with workshops with about 60 children at the school earlier this term.

“They drew ideas for the beach theme,” Ryan said.

“I went through all the drawings and came up with a design.”

Ryan said the surf board and turtle’s back were designed by students, and he was incorporating silhouettes of other students’ drawings on fish scales in the underwater scene.

“One side is going to be a 2m tall fish – it’s getting pulled by a fisherman,” he said.

Ryan said the murals on two walls took about eight days of painting, and he also recently painted an outdoor ping pong table in Noranda.

During the school holidays, Ryan will also create a large mural in the food court at Westfield Whitford City on April 26 and 27 between 10am and 2pm and on April 28 from 11am to 2pm.

Children can participate by drawing their favourite underwater creature and having it painted on the mural.
