Students bring Christmas joy to seniors

WOODVALE Primary School students brought some Christmas cheer to retirement village residents when they delivered their decorated cards on Friday.

Thirty Year 6 students were “Santa to a Senior”, delivering handmade cards to Timberside Villas residents, singing carols and enjoying a morning tea together.

Teacher Brett Barber said the visit was a fantastic opportunity for the kids to mix with the community.

“I was really impressed with the connection the kids had with the residents,” he said.

“This has been a great way to help us teach respect, communication and sharing.”

Resident Christine MacFarlan said her favourite thing about the event “was interacting with all the kids”.

“It’s good to see kids mixing and having conversations with seniors,” she said.

“The kids have been really well behaved and very chatty.”

Fellow resident Robert Berriman (88) said he was “surprised” by how much he had in common with 11-year-old student Matilda and he was happy to share his tips on living a healthy and long life by having “one banana a day and only drinking rain water”.

Lendlease retirement living general manager Andrew O’Connor said it was “wonderful to see another generation visiting and giving back”

“The opportunity for children to experience village life and how vibrant our communities are is always encouraged,” he said.
