The Sacred Heart College technology and enterprise teacher has taken his Year 11 and 12 students on a journey through a centuries-old tradition to make their own steel string acoustic guitars.

They have spent half a year building their instruments from planks of wood and learning how much work and detail goes into making a handcrafted musical instrument.

Last week, Year 12 student and The X Factor Australia finalist Sydnee Carter tuned and tested the guitars for her classmates so they could see the results of their hard work.

"I have always been passionate about designing and constructing objects, especially by one's own hands," Mr Donath said.

Both the students and he achieved results beyond their own expectations, he said.
