UK conference bid slips through crack at Joondalup council meeting

JOONDALUP councillors did not support the attendance of Cr Nige Jones at the Local Government Association’s annual conference in the UK.

At last month’s meeting, Cr Jones left the council chamber because of a financial interest so the remaining 11 elected members could consider his request to attend the Birmingham event from July 4 to 6.

However, no-one moved the motion, causing it to lapse.

A council report said Cr Jones wanted to attend because it “aligns with his role as an elected member” with an interest in topics including care and health improvement; community safety; culture, tourism and sport; economy and transport; environment; planning and housing; finance and welfare reform.

“Previously, the only international conferences attended by councillors related to ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability or sister city activities,” it said.

“Cr Jones has requested use of his conference and training expense allocation in lieu of attending a conference in the eastern states.

“He has not attended a conference since election in October 2015 and has a current conference allocation of $12,770.”

The trip was estimated to cost $5400.
