EDITH Cowan University will host a free public lecture, Science Unshackled, with Professor Renee James from Sam Houston State University.

During the silver jubilee lecture, Prof James will answer the question about why organisations pay for basic research.

In her humorous style, she will go on a romp through the “seemingly useless” world of pure science, where one thing leads to another in ways that result in major scientific advancements.

She will unpack the science to reveal how obscure studies of natural phenomena, including curved space-time, poisonous cone snails, exploding black holes, and the precise chemical makeup of the sun, led to WiFi, GPS, genetic sequencing, pain medications, and cancer treatments.

‘Science Unshackled’ brings both science and scientists to life and shows how simple curiosity can result in life-changing breakthroughs.

The free lecture will be at the ECU Joondalup Campus on November 15, from 4.30-6pm. Register to attend at http://tinyurl. com/h47nqfv.
