A VINNIES event at Kingsley’s Galaxy Drive-In Theatre next month aims to raise awareness of homelessness when sleeping in a car is someone’s only option.

The inaugural Vinnies Drive-In, Sleep-In on October 12 and 13 will focus on an often under-represented number of people who have no option but to sleep in their car.

The St Vincent de Paul Society is inviting families, friends, community and business organisations to donate their good night’s sleep and experience what it’s like to sleep in their car.

According to the charity, more than 9000 West Australians experience homelessness every night and 3656 of those are young people, including 1493 children under 12 years old.

Funds raised from the event will help Vinnies provide relief to vulnerable people as well as raise awareness about the challenges for people experiencing poverty and homelessness.

Those challenges include loneliness, fear and hunger as well as barriers to medical care, employment and education.

Social enterprise executive manager Carl Prowse said the event would bring attention to the complex issues around homelessness and social disadvantage.

“The Drive-In, Sleep-In event challenges people to break out of their comfort zone for one night to experience what it’s like to sleep in their car,” he said.

“Homelessness and poverty is often overlooked and misunderstood by the wider community.

“This is a glimpse into the reality of what it’s like to not have a home and to understand what the impact might be that we don’t always see in our busy lives.”

To take part, the minimum fundraising target is $500 per registered team.

The Agency Group will present the event, which will include a drive-in movie screening, modest dinner and breakfast.
