Walk of fame for City’s famous people

Tyler BrownJoondalup Times

FAMOUS people who hailed from the City of Joondalup or have strong links to the area will be recognised in a Walk of Fame.

Cr Russ Fishwick first presented the idea in June 2014 to establish a Joondalup Sporting Hall of Fame but at Monday’s council meeting he moved an alternate motion to create a Walk of Fame.

He said as well as including famous sportspeople such as Daniel Ricciardo and Mike Hussey, it should be expanded to include other famous people such as Bon Scott and Fiona Stanley.

He said Central Walk would be a “fantastic facility” to create the walk using pavers.

Cr Geoff Amphlett agreed but said there needed to be a process available to remove pavers if necessary following the unattractive scrubbing out of Rolf Harris’s name in the Walk of Fame at Hillarys Boat Harbour.

Cr Mike Norman asked if the walk could include members of the community who received awards at the City’s Australia Day ceremony but Mayor Troy Pickard said it was a different kind of recognition.

It is proposed the walk be established between Boas Avenue and Reid Promenade.

Funds will need to be considered in future budgets with the cost of supplying, engraving and laying pavers estimated at $1000 each.
