A TEAM with some very young and not so very young members taking part in next month’s Joondalup Wanneroo Relay for Life is the unlikely named Pocket Wockets.

Team captain Sandra Graham said the naming rights were given to the younger members.

“They liked Pocket Wockets, which they got from the Dr Seuss series of children’s books,” she said. “The rest of us liked Pocket Wockets, too.”

Sandra said the Relay for Life team was formed after a family friend of Renee Horgan was diagnosed with breast cancer.

Another team member and cancer survivor Lisa Mills said she was diagnosed with cancer 10 years earlier.

“I was 33 at the time and had just had my second baby,” she said. “It was during my six-week maternity check-up nurses noticed I had a tiny lump. I had a biopsy and it proved cancerous.”

Sandra said the team was preparing for the October Relay for Life and raising funds by holding high teas, baking stalls and selling lollies.

“Several members work in administration at Hollywood Hospital, where we enjoy good support,” she said. “We also get wonderful support from our families.”

As the October Relay looms closer, more teams are urgently needed to take part.
