Woodvale roos put on a show

GREENWOOD resident and one of the Times’ regular photo contributors Gary Tate captured this terrific snap of two big local kangaroos in combat.

He explains how the shot came about:

An early morning ride down Duffy Terrace in Woodvale always reveals many of the estimated 200 resident western grey kangaroos.

On this morning, I sighted two very tall males boxing each other.

Not only do they box with their forepaws, but they give each other some very savage kicks by supporting their bodies on their strong tails.

Kangaroos have developed extra thick skin around their stomachs to avoid serious injuries during these battles over females in the mob.
