Play-based learning keeps it fun at Goodstart Merriwa

SOME parents feel that three years old is too early for children to be in kindergarten.

But when you consider the natural desire of young children to learn, explore and play, the play-based learning curriculum in Goodstart Early Learning centres is a perfect match.

Play is the foundation of learning for children. It’s how they make sense of the world around them, hypothesise and experiment, learn to negotiate, understand their feelings and so much more.

The best part of all however, is that it’s fun! It keeps children coming back for more and helps them form positive feelings towards learning.

Christie Eaton, acting centre director at Goodstart Early Learning Merriwa said play-based learning is perfect for three-year-olds.

“The first five years are when children form their neural pathways and connections,” she said.

“Through play and active exploration, children’s brains are shaped and designed and many skills are developed such as: creativity, communication, problem solving and emotional regulation.

“These are all critical skills needed for school and adult life, and quality play-based learning is the best way to develop them.”

A well-rounded kindergarten curriculum

Many three-year-old children are already in child care, but it’s important to know the differences between what you might consider ‘normal’ child care and a dedicated, high quality kindergarten program.

Goodstart’s three-year-old kindergarten program is a structured play based program that aligns with the WA kindergarten curriculum and overseen by a University qualified teacher.  The program is well rounded and provides children with a fun, play-based environment in which to build skills like:

  • Social-emotional learning
  • Language and literacy
  • Science, technology, engineering and maths
  • Drama and pretend play
  • Creative arts
  • Physical activity and active play

It all sounds like a lot for a three-year-old to take in! But with our engaging and fun play-based learning approach, the learning comes naturally. With smaller class sizes, individual learning plans and qualified educators, three-year-olds thrive in our kindergarten program.
