THREE locals are testing their might against some of the best young lifesavers in Australia this week.

Breakers Swim Club members Madeline Thomson (16) and Jake Smith (19), as well as City of Joondalup resident Jakson Egan, are in Melbourne to contest the Australian Pool Life Saving Championships, which began yesterday.

Strong performances could earn them a spot in the national team, which faces international competitors throughout the year.

It was not easy for Thomson, Smith and Egan to earn a spot in the WA team, having completed development sessions in September and October before advancing through state trials in November.

Former national team member and accomplished athlete Sarah Hamilton is coach of the WA side.
