MULLALOO had a strong contingent at this year’s Australian Surf Life Saving Championships with seven junior and 27 senior and master competitors descending on the Queensland beach.
One of the club’s highlights from the youth event was the 2km beach run with Ryley Gardener and Ben Hillen (both pictured, right) taking gold and silver in the under-14 and under-15 events respectively.
Gardener also went on to make the final in the under-14 board race, as did Kane Smith in the under-15 surf race, before both teamed up with Hillen and Cooper Schulz to make finals in the cameron and board relays.
In the masters, seasoned competitor Mandy Lee won silver in the 45-49 female rescue tube race and bronze in the 45-49 single ski but her board rescue race did not end well when she broke her foot.
Gayle Gould also made the final in the 50-54 female beach flags.
Owen Vorster was a standout for the seniors, winning gold in the under-17 2km beach run after leading the whole race. Callan Smith was congratulated for making the final in the under-17 male surf race and joining Wes Gould and Ben Jones in the final for the under-19 male taplin relay.
Gould also made the final in the under-19 male surf race, board race and as part of the open mixed lifesaver relay, while Jones also made the final in the under-19 male surf race.
Paige Wood made the under-17 female single ski final and Tayla Tenaglia reached the champion lifesaver final.
Though competing for Newport SLSC, Mullaloo member Jamie Roberts won gold in the female double ski.
