CALAN Williams is about to take another step on his path to F1 having secured a seat in the official testing for the 2020 FIA Formula 3 Championship.

The 19-year-old from Edgewater will test with Jenzer Motorsport for three days from October 20 to 22 at the Valencia circuit.

The FIA Formula 3 Championship is the highest level of international Formula 3 racing, and is the direct stepping stone to Formula 2 and ultimately Formula 1.

Williams said he was “incredibly grateful” to Jenzer Motorsport for the opportunity, which will see him drive a car with top speeds of 300km/h.

“With the preparation I have had, and which is continuing, I feel ready to make this step,” he said.

“I am really looking forward to showing how I can perform in the more complex and powerful cars amongst a huge field of the best young drivers in the world at F3 level.

“I am also looking forward to experiencing the extra challenges of DRS and the Pirelli tyres designed to degrade in much the same way as they do in F1, meaning you have to manage the use of the tyre well.”

Competition for seats in the official tests and 2020 season will be incredibly fierce, with likely only a number of the 30 drives available for new drivers.

Williams is currently competing in his second season of the Euroformula Open F3 Championship with Fortec Motorsport.
