Aussie star Daniel Ricciardo is out of the Australian Formula 1 Grand Prix in Melbourne.

Duncraig’s Ricciardo, who started the race 12th on the grid in his first race with Renault, had to pull out on lap 31 in what commentators labelled a “sad sight”.

In a disastrous starting grid incident, Ricciardo went wide on to the grass as he tried to pass the Racing Point of Sergio Perez and his Renault’s front wing was spectacularly ripped off.

Ricciardo ‘gutted’

Ricciardo said he was “gutted” after hitting a “random” bump on the grass while trying to get around Perez on the inside.

“I didn’t see the wing come off, I knew I’d hit the car hard,” he told reporters about being surprised about the bump commentators described as concrete or a drain.

“Coming into breaking in turn 1, as soon as I locked the fronts I knew something was broken.

“I didn’t know that until now until I saw the replay.”
