Hillarys Yacht Club sail to Mindarie in penultimate race

John BirdJoondalup Times

HILLARYS Yacht Club held its penultimate race of the season on Sunday, with yachts sailing to Mindarie and back.

With spinnakers flying, the yachts set sail in a moderate and fluky south-easterly breeze for a quick run up the coast.

Picking wind shifts and deciding which side of Burns Beach rocks to sail were key to the fortunes of many.

Mulberry (Mark Pitt) in her first race back after mast repairs was a clear winner for line honours in division one but on handicap was second to Perle (John Bird) with Hard Evidence (Des Riley and Marshall Fox) third.

In division two, although Covert Operation (Bart Brouwer and Graham Atkinson) finished ahead of Helga (Mark Taylor) for line honours, on handicap those positions were reversed with Pandora (Chris Kelly) third. In division three, Catabatic (Rob Bills) was fastest and second on handicap with Sana II (Brian Buzzard) first and Sensei (Brett Bailey) third.

A lunch was had before the hard slog back to Hillarys after a 14 knot sea breeze filled in whilst the sailors were ensconced in the restaurant.

In the return race a tacking duel in division one between Deckchairs Overboard (Neil Harrison), Dart Vader (Wayne Pitcher) and Perle continued right to the finish line with the three boats finishing in that order a minute apart.

On handicap, Perle came first, Sandrine (Ian Conboy) second and Dart Vader third.

In division two, once again Covert Operation was fastest however on handicap it was Pandora first, Show Me (Bruce Ellery) second and Helga third.

In division three, Sana II was first and fastest with Sensei second and Comfortably Numb (Stephen O’Keefe) third.
