Joondalup cricket: Orr-some display of batting

Justin BianchiniJoondalup Times

JOONDALUP Districts opening batsman Kai Orr set a new under-14 club record with his unbeaten 182 against Subiaco Floreat at Iluka on Sunday.

The right-hander anchored Joondalup’s 3-299 with his better than a run a ball innings before the visitors responded with 5-186 from their 50 overs.

Did he have his eye on a double century?

“I was trying,” the 13-year-old all-rounder told the Weekender.

His 182 beat his previous top score of 109no in club cricket for Quinns.

He took Joondalup’s first wicket in Subiaco Floreat’s run chase before cramping up at the end of the innings, the swing bowler finishing with 1-16 off four overs.

His father Jason and Joondalup junior president Craig Gerrans said the batting success was reward for all the off-season training.

Gerrans described Kai’s knock as faultless.

“From ball one to the last ball, he just played the perfect innings,” he said.

“One he will remember for the rest of his life.

“We’re really proud of him. It was testament to the hard work he put in over winter.”

Kai, who counts the cut and cover drive among his favourite shots, is in the State under-15s squad.
