The 76-year-old veteran has retired many times in the past but opted to have one more crack at clinching an Australian title, which he did, winning the pre-1978 super senior championship.

Russell raced a perfect round, coming first in all three motos to win clearly on 75 points ahead of Colin Metcher on 64 and Trevor Lobegeiger on 62.

He also was placed sixth in the pre-1975 over-60s 263cc and over class.

Mullaloo’s Rick Speak also attended the event, winning the pre-1975 50 to 59 years 263cc and over championship with three wins from three races ahead of John Kemp on 64 and Alan Davidson on 58.

Despite two wins in the pre-1975 50 to 59 years 250cc class, a non-finish in the second race left Speak on 50 points that gave him fourth place for the championship.
