NBL: Perth Wildcats’ Greg Hire discusses latest injury setback

THERE is one thing that has always remained constant while I have been with the Perth Wildcats.

That is, the playing group will always respond to adversity.

We can be honest and say we have been playing inconsistent basketball over the last eight games.

We have been embarrassed along the way and questioned on the outside.

But as one of the more experienced guys on the team, it was definitely pleasing to see the team respond in an emphatic manner.

We held a tough meeting last Tuesday, which allowed guys the opportunity to air any suggestions they may have for the group.

That commitment on the training track carried over to the victory against New Zealand on Friday.

There were plenty of positives to take out of the game but this is the business end of the season and you want to be playing your best basketball most of the time.

We have a great match-up this weekend playing both games against Adelaide, who sit above us on the ladder. They are a young confident group and if you allow them to find their groove, they are extremely tough to stop.

For me, it’s obviously a frustrating time, suffering a little setback with the calf.

All of last week it felt like I was a sprite 21-year-old; OK maybe not 21, but you get my point.

I will have to be smart in terms of how I manage my workload in the future. No longer can I come in on my days off and get in extra weights sessions, which I’m accustomed to doing.

It’s frustrating, but I’ve had bigger challenges in the past and look forward to joining the group as we make a playoff push.
