Staff WriterJoondalup Times

The Jacks scored in each half to defeat Armadale 2-0 at ECU Football Stadium.

Marquee recruit Gordon Smith, formerly of the Scottish Premier League, scored on debut for the side with a strike in the 61st minute.

ECU coach Dale McCulloch was impressed with the attacker’s performance, but said the win was based on solid defence. “This win will breed confidence within the squad, but we had to dig deep, and I thought we were very good and outstanding defensively.”

At Litis Stadium, Sorrento drew with Floreat Athena 0-0 in a blustery night game.

Terrific performances from Gulls keeper James Morgan and the hosts’ custodian Jason Saldaris made it a tough evening for the sides’ strikers.

Sorrento coach Jamie Harnwell thought his side should have scored having dominated the match.

“On the plus side we kept another clean sheet and we dominated another team. (I’m) disappointed not to win but there are still positives there,” he said.

Sorrento faces Balcatta at Percy Doyle Reserve this weekend, while ECU challenges Subiaco at home.
