ECU Joondalup will hope to stretch its winning streak to four against Subiaco as it closes in on struggling arch-rival Sorrento in National Premier Leagues WA soccer this weekend.

The eighth-placed Jacks recorded their third straight victory with a 1-0 win over Armadale last Saturday, leaving them just a point shy of seventh-placed Sorrento, which lost to Floreat Athena 3-0.

ECU striker Gordon Smith scored the only goal of the game with a header midway through the second half.

The side wore black armbands in honour of teammate Steven McGarry’s father, who diedin Scotland last week.

Smith said the side wasn’t at its best, but defended well.

“The pitch made it difficult for us, but we defended well today and that’s three clean sheets on the trot, and long may it continue,” he said.

At Percy Doyle Reserve, Sorrento slumped to its fourth-straight loss.

Coach Jamie Harnwell did not think the scoreline reflected the match.
