SBL: Joondalup Wolves no longer league’s best ahead of double header

Staff WriterJoondalup Times

THE State Basketball League has kicked up a notch in its final month with Joondalup losing its hold on top spot heading into a double-header this weekend.

The Wolves suffered a shock loss to the lowly Goldfields last Saturday, allowing the Buccs to claim the mantle as the best team in the competition.

Joondalup could reclaim the top rung this weekend if Geraldton loses to Stirling and the Wolves defeat Perry Lakes at home on Friday and Lakeside away on Saturday. The former league leaders were beaten 93-91 by the Giants in a tight Kalgoorlie contest.

The hosts hit 23 free throws from 28 attempts, with the visitors having just 12 opportunities and landing nine from the penalty stripe.

A 16-8 offensive rebound count in the Giants’ favour was also telling.

Joondalup’s Jalen Billups led scoring with 28 points, while captain Seb Salinas had 10 rebounds.
