WHEN West Perth captain Jay van Berlo was last named club fairest and best, he was in his second season of league football and would be drafted to Fremantle the next year.
Eight years on, having been delisted by the Dockers in 2013, he earned his second Breckler Medal at the Falcons awards dinner on Saturday night.
The big-bodied midfielder broke through to take the Falcons’ top prize after being runner-up the past two seasons.
Ever the dogged worker, van Berlo averaged more than five tackles a game while racking up an average 21 disposals and kicking 14 goals.
The night also paid tribute to van Berlo’s former co-captain Luke Tedesco, who retired after 152 games. In his 10 seasons at the club, the backman earned life membership and became a premiership player in 2013. Mitch Peirce was named reserves fairest and best, while Joel Horgan earned the colts award.
