BERTRAM Primary School students have welcomed the arrival of a canine companion during reading time.

Story Dog recruit Ben sits weekly with selected children who read to him and his handler.

Since the arrival of the placid pooch, the childrens’ focus, reading skills and confidence has increased.

Story Dogs is a not-for-profit organisation formed in 2009 and is based on the successful American literacy program Reading Education Assist and Dogs.

A Wellard family-owned business has sponsored Ben to encourage kids to learn to read.

B n L Earthworks owner Louise Schnuriger said the sponsorship provides everything Ben needs to help young children rise to their full reading potential.

“We are proud to be able to provide what Ben needs to help these kids get a great start in their education,” she said.
