Witches of Eastwick at Koorliny Arts Centre

Vanessa SchmittWeekend Kwinana Courier

The musical adaptation, described as “musical comedy heaven” and “a wickedly funny comedy” , is based on the novel of the same name by John Updike and was adapted by John Dempsey (lyrics and book) and Dana P. Rowe (music).

Rehearsals are underway for the musical, which is set in the sleepy New England town of Eastwick, where three (not-so-wicked) witches Alexandra Spofford, Sukie Rougemont and Jane Smart are feeling trapped in their everyday humdrum lives.

Enter a charismatic stranger, a devil-like character called Darryl Van Horne.

Seducing each of the women in turn, Darryl teaches them how to expand the powers locked within, though their new unorthodox lifestyle scandalises the town.

As these powers become more sinister and events spiral out of control, the women come to realise that Darryl’s influence is corrupting everyone he meets and resolve to use their new-found strength to exile him from their lives.

Audiences will be spellbound by the onstage antics, and biting their nails as they wait to see whether the witches can outwit Darryl.

Director Brad Tudor said the most challenging aspect of staging the show was the magic, but he hoped audiences would go home wondering: how did they do that with the candle?

Due to adult content, this show is best suited to audiences over 15 .

The show is presented by 9 Lives Theatrical Production Company in community partnership with Koorliny Arts Centre, by arrangement with Cameron McIntosh Limited.
