After an early wicket, Kurt Verdonk came in at three and steadied the ship making a match-high 37 runs.

Some quick wickets had Kwinana stalled at 6-127 but some solid partnership saw Kwinana finish its 40 overs all out for 188.

They came out to bowl with a positive attitude which paid dividends early, with Atkinson reeling in a screamer at cover to claim the first catch of the season.

Andrew Gibbs (3-10) and Lincoln Dwyer (3-32) combined for six wickets, which saw Kardinya Lakes bowled out for 115.

A superb innings of 52 from Ray Schuller resulted in fifth grade clinching a close victory away from home against East Fremantle.

Captain Marcus Draper won the toss and elected to bat.

The team batted around Schuller and pushed its total to 9-173 from 40 overs.

Kwinana’s tight bowling resulted in regular wickets, preventing East Fremantle from picking up momentum.

East Fremantle could not recover and ended up falling four runs short.

David Stewart had the best figures taking 3-23.

Fifth grade takes on Cockburn at Orelia Oval in round 2 on Saturday.

On Saturday, one-day Cs, led by Steve Nichols, take on Maddington at Gilmore Oval to start their campaign, while One-day Fs season begins at Hume Road Oval playing Thornlie lead by returning captain David Langlands.
